The aim of this study was to assess the biological effect of the product Jodis Concentrate (JC) on the rabbit ovaries by evaluating the folliculogenesis and expression of oocyte-specific growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF9).The experiment was conducted with 30 female two month old New Zealand rabbits that were the F1 offspring born to mothers differently treated with Jodis concentrate. The control group (n=10), consisted of F1 offspring born to mothers without iodine treatment, and was not supple- mented with JC. The first experimental group (n=10), consisted of F1 offspring born to mothers treated with JC during pregnancy and the suckling period, and was supplemented with JC daily at a dose of 2 ml/L drinking. The second experimental group (n=10), consisted of F1 offspring born to mothers without iodine treatment, and was also supplemented daily with the same dose of JC - 2 ml/L drinking. All groups were fed with total mixed ration for growing rabbits. The trial lasted 48 days. The ovaries were weighed and prepared for histological examination. The GDF9 protein expression in the ovary was determined by immunohistochemical analysis. The addition of JC to the drinking water of female rabbits led to more active development of the ovarian follicles from primordial to tertiary stage in both experimental groups. More intensive GDF9 protein expression in the oocytes and cumulus cells of rabbits, supplemented with JC was observed.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is caused by microvascular or macrovascular insufficiency in the majority of patients. Recent studies have shown that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) can induce angiogenesis in different body organs. The effect of HBOT on the non-surgery-related ED has not been investigated yet. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of HBOT on sexual function and penile vascular bed in non-surgical ED patients. A prospective analysis of patients suffering from chronic ED treated with 40 daily HBOT sessions (80-hours HBO 2 ATA 100% O2).

Clinical efficacy was assessed using the International Index of Erectile Function questionnaire (IIEF) and a global efficacy question (GEQ). The effect on the penile vascular bed was evaluated by perfusion MRI.

Thirty men (mean age of 59.2 ± 1.4) suffering from ED for 4.2 ± 0.6 years completed the protocol. HBOT significantly improved all IIEF domains by 15-88% (p < 0.01). Erectile function improved by 88% (p < 0.0001) and 80% of the patients reported positive outcome according to the GEQ.

Angiogenesis was indicated by perfusion MRI that showed a significant increase by 153.3 ± 43.2% of K-trans values in the corpous cavernous (p < 0.0001).

  • HBOT can induce penile angiogenesis and improve erectile function in men suffering from EcD. HBOT reverses the basic common pathophysiology, atherosclerosis and decreased penile perfusion, responsible for most cases of ED.

Endometrial sonographic and color doppler features can be used to predict the occurrence of pregnancy in natural or stimulated cycles. Implantation will usually only take place if the endometrium has reach a certain stage of vascularisation and development.

The aim of this study was to evaluate endometrial development -- endometrial thickness and reflectivity , subendometrial, endometrial and uterine perfusion, after hyperbaric oxygenation, using transvaginal color doppler.

During a three years period 32 women with unexplained infertility were entered into a randomised study. The patients were treated in multiplaced HAUX chamber at pressure of 2.3 ATA during 70 minutes, 7 days consecutively beginning with day 5th of menstrual cycle. The evaluation of effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy was carried out by transvaginal color doppler sonography which was continuously used starting from 8th day of menstrual cycle until the ovulation in the cycles when the therapy was applied , one month before and one month after the therapy. Folliculometry in the cycles when hyperbaric oxygen therapy at 2.3 ATA was applied, indicated an excellent response of endometrium. Thickness of endometrium at the time of ovulation was 11.0 +/- 2.6 mm.

Desirable quality of endometrium was significantly better in the cycle when HBO therapy had been applied (p< 0.001). The doppler flowmetry of the uterine arteries indicated that the uterine blood vessel resistance was slightly higher than expected. Mapping of subendometrial blood vessels in the cycles covered by hyperbaric oxygen therapy showed the intensive capillary network of endometrium with low resistance Ri< 0.45.

  • The oxygen used under higher pressure -- oxygen as a drug , may have an extraordinary significance for better outcome of pregnancy implantation by improving endometrial receptivity. If endometrial receptivity is conditioned by adequate vascularisation and oxygenation, then hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the treatment of choice.

[Hyperbaric oxygenation in the treatment of patients with chronic congestive prostatitis and lower fertility]

[Article in Russian]

Zadoev SA, Evdokimov VV, Rumiantsev VB, Osmolovskiĭ EO.

Due to deteriorated demographic indices in the country, male infertility is a highly pressing problem. Chronic prostatitis is one of its causes. Hyperbaric oxygenation was used to affect male genital microcirculation, thus improving the spermatic morphological and functional characteristics. Positive effects of the method are ascribed not only to better microcirculation, but also to improved redox processes in spermatogenesis.
