This Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded to William G. Kaelin Jr, Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe and Gregg L. Semenza “for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to Oxygen availability”.
The ability of organisms to respond to changes in Oxygen availability is of fundamental importance to life on earth. Work by the prize-winning scientists has shown that in animal cells, Oxygen availability affects gene expression through oxygen-sensitive post-translational modification and the subsequent proteasomal degradation of Hypoxia Inducible Factors.
This research has contributed to the foundation understanding - the mechanistic basis for the cellular response to hypoxia and paved the way for the therapeutic targeting of the response pathway impacting health. Today, we understand that our body senses fluctuations in Oxygen, and that rejuvenation processes can actually be triggered by these Oxygen fluctuations. This is one of the main principles behind the OXYMED protocol.

In 1983, Hooper’s humble beginnings were as a chiropractor with Masters Applied Science qualification in neuro-acupuncture. Hooper established a multidisciplinary clinic known as the Spinal Rehabilitation Group, integrating orthodox medical and allied treatment approaches. The successful medico-legal clinic was supported by a team of 13 doctors and specialists of various disciplines.
Then, in 1993, tragedy struck the Hooper family when their 18-month old daughter fell into a smouldering ash fire and suffered third degree burns. It was during this period that he became acquainted with the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for treating burns and other neurologic disorders.
In 1996, Hooper incorporated the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy into the multidisciplinary rehabilitation model with focus on orthopaedic and neurological disorders. In 2005, he published Hyperbaric Medicine - The Life is in the Blood. In 2006, he introduced Australia’s first LOKOMAT – Adult and Paediatric Robotic Gait Assisted Walking Machine.
The LOKOMAT proved to be revolutionary in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders and as a pioneering world first, combining the effects of LOKOMAT with the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen.
In Australia, the combination approach of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and LOKOMAT are viewed as “novel and unique” and the subject of multiple regulatory challenges. Hooper has not practiced as a “chiropractor” for over 25 years.

Spinal Rehabilitation Group (aka Spinal Rehab) featured multiple medical specialists, doctors and allied professions. Spinal Rehab was an industry first providing an integrative multidisciplinary approach specialised in the treatment and management of patients suffering complex spinal and orthopaedic disorders.
The traditional concept of 'profession flag flying' was actively discouraged with patients receiving advanced medical innovation with combination modalities to impact functional stabilisation.
The introduction of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in 1996 for 'disc pathology, failed spinal surgery syndrome, chronic pain' was 'unique and novel' with the application pioneered by Dr Malcolm Hooper. Many of the original pre and post MRIs featuring significant outcomes continue to feature on the internet - Google search (HBOT and disc prolapse). The clinical application of HBOT broadened the patient base to include patients attending with complex neurologic disorders and chronic illness.
A name change emerged with the establishment of Melbourne Hyperbaric (HyperMED).
Rotary Overseas Medical Aid For Children (ROMAC)

Malcolm Hooper was a serving member of the not for profit Rotary Overseas Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC).
He served as the Asia Pacific Coordinator for Public Relations, Development and Operations and reported directly to the founder and chair Mr Barry Cooper AO.
ROMAC is about providing lifesaving medical care requiring the child and family member to be brought to Australia, hosted by an Australian family whilst the child received surgical intervention and following rehabilitation. ROMAC is a not for profit and requires supporting committee members to provide their personal time and travel at the cost of the individual.
Malcolm Hooper was both initiator and responsible for the establishment of ROMAC in Papua New Guinea in 1996 and Sri Lanka in 1997. These successful and continuing endeavors required extensive consultation and negotiations with Australian and International government representatives, multiple regulatory authorities; and required significant influences with corporate entities (local and abroad) and the continuing support of local community (local and abroad). This was a 'ground-up' international initiative and cooperation.
ROMAC activities in PNG quickly spread and the ROMAC story received considerable media attention and publicity with the urgent news of the birth of the PNG ‘Siamese Twins’. The Twins with the assistance of Mr. Ray Martin and Channel 9 were transported from remote PNG to Australia for specialist care at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
Over the many years the lives of literally hundreds of children requiring life-saving surgical interventions have travelled to Australia as a consequence of the ROMAC endeavors. Many of the young children had suffered terrible burns to the face and neck with horrible contractures and required repeat surgical procedures over many months.
