The air we breathe is 21% O2

The Power of Oxygen

Everything in your body depends on the brain. From basic functions like breathing to complex activity like interpreting senses or storing memories, your brain is the command center of your body, and its most complex organ. Like all organs, the brain needs Oxygen and it demands more Oxygen than most organs, for example far more than the heart. In fact, while it makes up only 2% of your body mass, the brain uses over 20% of the Oxygen you take in. As we age, our bodies become less efficient at channeling Oxygen. This is why, as you age, you experience a gradual reduction in cognitive and physical performance.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

All living cells are Oxygen dependent. The basic goal of HBOT is to increase the amount of Oxygen delivered to the body tissues. HBOT is the application of two variables - increased pressure and increased Oxygen. The normal plasma Oxygen by volume is 3% (0.3 ml O2/100 ml blood), under HBOT conditions the Oxygen saturation increases 10-20 times that of breathing room air at normal sea level atmospheric pressure. Through the blood, the enriched Oxygen is delivered to various body organs and tissues accelerating the physiological healing processes. In addition, by using a certain protocol of treatment crucial regenerative elements occur, such as for example proliferation and migration of stem cells to the damaged tissue.

HBOT has been described as the 'integrative bridge' between orthodox medicine and complementary approaches. Oxygen is essential to all drug delivery. HBOT has profound effects on immune modulation in the presence of hypoxia.

HBOT can improve the outcome of a wide variety of health challenges, usually as part on an overall medical care plan.

Under hyperbaric conditions, Oxygen molecules become reduced in size to more easily dissolve into the liquid portion of the blood, ie clusters of "charged" jellyfish moving in "symphony". Increased dissolved Oxygen in the plasma is readily transported throughout the body to speed healing, regeneration, performance and optimal living.

What are the benefits of HBOT?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is an all-natural, non-invasive treatment that can improve the quality of life of the patient in many areas when standard medicine is not working.  Many stubborn and chronic health challenges due to hypoxia, have the potential of improving outcomes when combined with HBOT. Oxygen is a signaling agent.

  • Enhancement of the body’s natural ability to heal and regenerate

  • Increased plasma and cerebrospinal fluid loading capacity of Oxygen, not achievable at normal sea level pressure

  • Neovascularization - new capillary formation (angiogenesis) to areas of penumbra (ischemia)

  • Revitalized mitochondria respiration and function (cellular energy)

  • Increased neuroplasticity

  • Aiding in fighting infection and anaerobic bacteria

  • Decreased inflammation and inflammatory cytokine expressions

  • Upregulates anti inflammatory gene expressions

  • Proliferation and migration of stem cells to the damaged tissue

  • Reduces 'hypoxic cross talk' inflammatory cytokines pathways including IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, S100B through several transcription factors regulating inflammation, including hypoxia inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), Nrf2 and NFkB

  • Increases the counter-inflammatory pathways including IL-4, IL-10, IL-13, GM-CSF (Granulocyte Macrophage Colony Stimulating Factor), BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor) levels

Healing cannot take place without appropriate Oxygen levels in the tissue and cells. Many chronic disorders and injuries fail to heal properly because of inadequate Oxygen levels (hypoxia). Inflammation, swelling, and reduced blood flow contribute to non-healing. This means adequate Oxygen is unable to reach the damaged area.

Be at your best, whatever your age. Relax, watch a movie or an educational documentary and let Oxygen do the work at a cellular level throughout your entire body. Then enjoy the benefits of rejuvenation.

Our story

We have over 23 years of clinical experience using Tier 2 applications of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy applied with personalised treatment plans. In addition to routine blood work, we encourage specific Cytokine Testing, adapted ketogenic diets, nutritional coaching and supplements based on specific cytokine markers. We have interest in chronic bacterial and viral induced pathologies. Other past and present therapies include LOKOMAT (Robotic Gait Assisted Walking), Monorail Walking, Vibration Training, Cryotherapy, VacuMED and VacuSports (Lower Body Negative Compression).

How do we treat?

OXYMED has 4 monoplace (single occupancy) upright seated chambers at our Center enabling us to treat 4 patients concurrently. The HBOT treatments are typically 90-minute sessions and scheduled from 8 am to 8 pm allowing patients flexibility and convenience when scheduling the treatments as part of their personal daily schedules. There is no age limit to begin HBOT and we treat patients of all ages. In addition, the Center has a staff member on call 7 days per week for urgent referral cases.

The Australian manufactured chambers are spacious, modern and Worksafe compliant. Finally, in addition to the HBOT itself, we offer comprehensive treatment tailored for the specific indication. Most patients are referred, however we may also recommend additional medical supervision on an individual case basis.

Enquiry & new patient admissions are private and all correspondence subject to consent, and 'strict confidentiality'.

Malcolm Hooper, is a past International Executive Director Hyperbaric Medicine International (HMI), formerly International Hyperbaric Medical Association (IHMA). He is also past Vice President of International Relations, International Hyperbaric Medical Foundation (IHMF).

 * Malcolm Hooper is a regular keynote speaker, poster exhibits and author. He is the founder and clinical director of OXYMED Australia (formerly HyperMED) where during some twenty five years, he gained international renown for providing the wider applications of Hyperbaric Oxygenation.  Our clients include world leading athletes and celebrities to those afflicted with serious health challenges.

In 1983, Hooper’s humble beginnings were as a chiropractor with Masters Applied Science qualification in neuro-acupuncture. Hooper established a multidisciplinary clinic known as the Spinal Rehabilitation Group, integrating orthodox medical and allied treatment approaches. The successful medico-legal clinic was supported by a team of 13 doctors and specialists of various disciplines.

Then, in 1993, tragedy struck the Hooper family when their 18-month old daughter fell into a smouldering ash fire and suffered third degree burns. It was during this period that he became acquainted with the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for treating burns and other neurologic disorders.

In 1996, Hooper incorporated the use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy into the multidisciplinary rehabilitation model with focus on orthopaedic and neurological disorders. In 2005, he published Hyperbaric Medicine - The Life is in the Blood.

In 2006, he introduced Australia’s first LOKOMAT – Adult and Paediatric Robotic Gait Assisted Walking Machine.

  • The LOKOMAT proved to be revolutionary in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders and as a pioneering world first, combining the effects of LOKOMAT with the benefits of Hyperbaric Oxygen in the treatment of chronic brain and spinal cord injury.

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy enhances stem cell mobilisation and the immune modulatory effects on cytokine functions. The ‘penumbra state’ describes cells and neural pathways in a ‘dormant’ low metabolic state due to hypoxia. The effects of HBOT when combined with LOKOMAT repetitive gait assisted movement enhances neuroplasticity and functional changes.

  • In Australia, the combination approach of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and LOKOMAT are viewed as “novel and unique” and the subject of multiple regulatory challenges. Hooper has not practiced as a “chiropractor” for over 25 years.
